Author: Editorial team
Reading time: about 2 min

Allama Muhammad Iqbal

Allama Muhammad Iqbal (1877–1938) was a poet and thinker who wrote in Urdu and Persian. Born in Sialkot, he explored selfhood, action, hope and spiritual growth. Bang-e-Dara and Bal-e-Jibril are among his well-known Urdu collections.

His poetry invites readers to reflect on their abilities and their responsibilities. This is an original introductory note; selected couplets appear below in Roman Urdu, while the Urdu edition keeps their original script.

Selected poetry — Roman Urdu

Sitaron se aage jahan aur bhi hain
Abhi ishq ke imtihan aur bhi hain

Tahi, zindagi se nahin yeh fazaen
Yahan saikron karwan aur bhi hain

Qanaat na kar aalam-e-rang-o-boo par
Chaman aur bhi, aashiyan aur bhi hain

Roman Urdu transliteration of selected couplets; not an English translation. Read the Urdu edition for the original script.
